Treatment for Excessive Sweating with Injections

If you suffer from excessive sweating, you may be a candidate for injections to help manage your symptoms. I find these treatments to be life changing for many of my patients.

Where is it injected

Most of the patients I see have excessive sweating under the arms. I’m very conscious of the impact this has on their quality of life. I’ve had patients who have changed shirts up to 20 times a day and some who have even used sanitary napkins under their arms.  I appreciate how you alter the wardrobe you purchase for your sweating and how many cloths you’ve burn’t through!  I also treat a number of patients with facial sweating. Palm and Hand treatments are harder to treat and rarer for me to treat. But it is possible after topical local anaesthetic rather than nerve blocks.

What are the patients reviews who have had this treatment

Honestly, I have seen this treatment transform the lives of some of my patients. Excessive sweating is debilitating and I find people enjoy a better quality of life never having to worry about a dripping and a wet shirt again.  I am always told how fantastic it is to be able to buy shades and types of clothing they like. They often wonder why they didn’t come earlier.

What to expect during treatment

The treatment is very quick and easy. It takes about 15 min to do. Ask for pre-icing if you feel worried about the pain, but generally it is well tolerated and people don’t find it painful. We use tiny little insulin needles, so it’s more like a scratching sensation.  I  inject small amounts of a the neuromodulator Botox into the areas of the body that are prone to sweating.  It’s a scattering of small injections spaced 1 cm2 apart.  The neuromodulator works by blocking the signals that tell the sweat glands to produce sweat, helping to reduce the amount of sweat that is produced. Patient return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure. The injections work by 2 wks and last 4-9 months. In Australia there is medicare support for treatment if you are eligible.

What are the risks and side effects

While injections for excessive sweating are generally safe and effective, there are some risks and side effects associated with the treatment but it is by and large extremely well tolerated.  These may include temporary redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site. However, these side effects are typically mild and temporary, and most patients find that the benefits of the treatment far outweigh any risks or discomfort.

Why have treatment with a dermatologist

Dermatologists are trained physicians and can determine if there are any systemic or underlying issues contributing to your sweating. They  can also help you determine whether injections for excessive sweating are a good option for you and provide guidance on how to prepare for and recover from the procedure. Some people may not need injections and may require alternative options.
