Laser Treatment for Rhinophyma
Precision Reshaping of the Nose with Fully Ablative COâ‚‚ Laser
Rhinophyma is a progressive skin condition that causes the nose to become enlarged, thickened, and bulbous—often with visible pores and a distorted contour. While it most often arises in patients with rosacea, it can occur independently and significantly affect self-confidence.
At Northern Sydney Dermatology & Laser, Dr Wines uses fully ablative CO₂ laser to gently sculpt and restore the natural contours of the nose—achieving safe, immediate, and meaningful improvements.
If you are watching this please know this is a life changing procedure. Usually in one treatment we produce significant results. But in some individuals it can take longer. Results vary between individuals. Images are of patients treated by Dr Nina Wines and are published with their consent. These are for illustrative purposes and are not a guarantee of results
What Does the Procedure Involve?
The laser procedure is carefully planned and performed under local anaesthesia, and typically takes under an hour. Here’s what to expect:
Step 1: Anaesthetic Preparation
A topical anaesthetic cream is applied to the nose, followed by a series of local anaesthetic injections to ensure full numbness. We also use cold air flow throughout the procedure for added comfort.Step 2: COâ‚‚ Laser Sculpting
Using a fully ablative CO₂ laser, I carefully resurface and sculpt the nose—removing excess tissue layer by layer to refine shape and reduce bulk. The laser allows me to work with millimetre-level precision, avoiding unnecessary damage to surrounding tissue.Step 3: Cooling and Post-Treatment Care
Once the reshaping is complete, the area is cooled and a structured aftercare protocol is discussed. You’ll be provided with everything you need to heal safely at home.
Aftercare & Recovery
Post-treatment care is an essential part of achieving optimal results. You’ll be supported every step of the way with:
Olive oil soaks to keep the skin soft and prevent crusting
Dilute vinegar soaks to reduce bacteria and inflammation
Regular photographic updates and guided check-ins with me for close monitoring
Wound care advice personalised to your skin healing response
Most patients recover over 10–14 days, with visible improvements continuing as redness fades and the skin remodels.
How Many Treatments Are Needed?
For most patients, one treatment is sufficient to reshape the nose and restore a natural contour. In more severe cases, a second-stage treatment may be recommended several months later for refinement.
FAQ – Laser for Rhinophyma
1. Is the laser procedure painful?
The combination of topical cream, local injections, and cooling air ensures that the procedure is virtually pain-free.
2. How long does recovery take?
You’ll experience 7–10 days of crusting and redness, followed by gradual improvement over several weeks. Most people return to normal activities after 1–2 weeks.
3. Will I need more than one treatment?
In mild to moderate cases, one session is usually enough. For more advanced rhinophyma, we may recommend a second session for refinement.
4. Will there be scarring?
Laser treatment is designed to minimise scarring. With careful technique and appropriate aftercare, the skin heals smoothly and scarring is extremely rare.
5. How is this different to surgical rhinophyma removal?
Traditional surgery can be more invasive, with greater risk of scarring and less precise contouring. COâ‚‚ laser allows for millimetre-level precision and a more refined aesthetic result.
