Brown spots on the face may look similar, but the causes and best treatments vary widely. Experience and diagnostic clarity is essential so as to avoid missing important skin cancer.
Why Expert Diagnosis Matters
Pigmentation & Brown spots can be caused by:
Sun freckles (solar lentigines)
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) or Melasma
Age spots / seborrheic keratoses
Precancerous sun damage (e.g. actinic keratoses)
Melanoma or pigmented skin cancers
Treating pigmentation without ruling out skin cancer risks can be dangerous. As a qualified dermatologist, Dr Wines ensures that any pigmented lesion is properly assessed before treatment. Early skin cancers can mimic harmless freckles or age spots—and delay in diagnosis can be life-threatening.
How We Treat Brown Spots
Because pigmentation is often a mix of different elements at different depths of the skin, your treatment plan may combine several devices:
BBL (BroadBand Light): Targets superficial pigment such as sun freckles or darker lentigines
QS Nano Laser: Breaks up deeper pigment such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation but is also deployed for low contrast brown spots
Fractional Laser Resurfacing: Helps remove superficial age spots or rough sun damage (e.g. seborrheic keratoses)
It is more common that individuals have a variety of different types of sunspots on their skin. For this reason, to manage them well multiple technologies need to be used —often in a single session.
What to Expect from Your Program
Thorough Dermatologist Assessment: To rule out suspicious lesions, assess pigmentation type, and plan treatment
Bespoke Laser Selection: Devices are selected based on depth, location, and type of pigment
Treatment Tailored to Your Skin Tone: Dr Wines applies extra precautions for patients with skin of colour to avoid unwanted lightening or rebound pigment
Safe & Effective Outcomes: Treatments are spaced and layered to achieve results faster with fewer sessions
