My Clinic: Northern Sydney Dermatology and Laser

Northern Sydney Dermatology and laser started as a partnership between myself and Dr Liz Dawes Higgs  15 years ago & now is a partnership of three with Dr Shreya Andric joining them.  From humble beginnings as an empty shell in an empty building with an empty appointment book we are proud to be known today as one of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest dermatology and laser clinics. We currently are a team of 12 dermatologist, have  45+ employees and over 60000 patients to care for. Our goal has always been to strive for excellence in dermatology and this continues to be our mission and vision to this day.

Skin is my passion.

Having been a dermatologist for almost two decades, I’ve treated people at all ages and stages from teenagers with cystic acne to pregnant mothers suffering from rashes to people inhibited by their scars or skin appearance. I know intimately how skin issues effect confidence and the knock on effect this has on your quality of life. My treatments centre on a core belief - that I want to make you feel better within yourself. I understand the impact skin has on people’s lives and love witnessing how people feel when it is improved.

Even though I started my medical career training to be an obstetrician, skin was always a passion – even if it was buried deep in my subconscious! I had terrible acne as a teenager and that experience obviously stayed with me, propelling me to help others with their skin concerns. The topic fascinates me as the skin tells many stories about people. I love how almost every internal disease has a skin presentation.

I co-founded Northern Sydney Dermatology with my fellow colleague, Liz Dawes-Higgs. During our training, we both had babies which was not very common at the time. It was a really tough time and required grit and perseverance. We worked well together so decided to open Northern Sydney Dermatology 15 years ago.

Today, we provide honest, ethical, innovative and up-to-date treatments in a compassionate and approachable way together with our respected team of colleagues. We treat everyone on an individual basis with appropriate customised care. My patients teach me so much and I get such a thrill out of helping them. It is my essence and what drives and gives me purpose.

Outside of work, I’ve been married for 24 years and have two beautiful teenage children. Being a working mum and owning a business can be difficult, but I’m proud of what Northern Sydney Dermatology & Laser represents, how we care for people and our core values.

My most important passion through my work is to make a difference. Through my day to day work I try to take a more personalised & individualised approach. For me it’s not about the skin, but more about how the skin problem is affecting a person. I strive to improve confidence and quality of life for my patients. My goal is all about making people’s interior landscape better by fixing and managing the external problem for the long term so that at least skin can no longer hold them back. It’s important for me to be a part of the progress of my patients from consultation ensuring the results through. I see treatments through with regular contact with my patients afterwards direct to me. Skin disease can be devastating and can affect people in ways those not affected don’t understand.

I have been involved with The Steve Waugh Foundation who help children with rare diseases. An amazing charity. In the past I worked with Kenyan charity So They Can where I as a volunteer dermatologist, travelling to Africa on multiple occasions to treat chronic skin conditions; illnesses horribly advanced simply because patients couldn’t access medications. But now I am turning my focus on our local community and trying to come up with ways that we are a team can contribute to society in a wider sense. In any case, all of these experiences have taught me so many things but if I had to pick a key one, it would be that giving and volunteering makes me a part of a larger, prouder story of hope; both for individuals and humanity as a whole.
