A dermatologist is a doctor who is trained as an expert in the diagnosis and management of skin cancer and skin, hair and nail diseases. To become a dermatologist a minimum of 11-12 years of medical training is required.

To be accepted onto the training scheme for dermatology, a doctor is carefully selected by The Australasian College of Dermatology. Advanced training in Dermatology involves four years of intensive supervised study, research and clinical practice in approved training centres. At the end of training the candidates have to pass rigorous specialist clinical and written examinations. After passing these exams the trainee obtains a Fellowship of the Australasian College of Dermatologists (FACD).

Following completion of the Fellowship it is expected that Dermatologists maintain their professional standards and education. This is monitored by the Australasian College of Dermatologists through a continuing professional development program.
